Fixing connection errors
Honeywell Wi-Fi
Thermostat Troubleshooting
Not long ago I bought and
installed a Honeywell RTH9580WF Wi-fi thermostat. It is a really great device, but unfortunately it is
powered by power from the furnace (through the thermostat wire). If the furnace
is powered down for service (or from a power loss) the thermostat will lose its
wi-fi connection to your home router, and you will get the following error via
email:
The following Alert
has occurred:
The thermostat (xxx) is not communicating with My Total Connect Comfort.

The iPhone app for the thermostat
won’t work either. Even after the power is restored to the thermostat and it is
working normally, you may still get connection errors. If so, here’s the fix:
Go to the system menu on the
thermostat and enter the Wi-fi setup section. Make sure your know your wi-fi
network’s current password! Disconnect the thermostat from the Wi-fi network
(the only option available in the menu). Then reconnect, selecting your network
and then entering the password. Note the Device MAC ID MAC ID and CRC number on
the thermostat screen – write it down or take a pic of it on your cellphone.
Once the thermostat is set,
go to a web browser on your computer or smartphone and log on to:
If the Total Connect website
is still bitching that the thermostat is off-line, you will have to delete the
location, and then add it back in again. Once you do, Total Connect will ask
you to verify it from the thermostat. From that point you should be back to
normal.
